As well as treating referred cases, I also treat my own dog, Lindy. Her journey exemplifies the efficacy of non-surgical management for degenerative conditions and the transformative impact of physiotherapy on quality of life.
BACKGROUND
In 2020, I rescued Lindy, then 18 months old, from a shelter in Northern Greece. Aware of potential joint issues due to her breed and family history of hip dysplasia, I anticipated the need for proactive care. Lindy's shelter environment, with limited activity and irregular exercise, stressed the importance of tailored intervention as soon as possible. Although I was prepared to start her physiotherapy from the get-go, Lindy was very nervous when she first arrived and cautious of handling, meaning that we had to build up to everything gradually.
DIAGNOSIS
As Lindy settled into her new home and routine, I observed an abnormal gait and minor left hind limb lameness during walks. A veterinary assessment and diagnostic imaging confirmed mild hip dysplasia in both hind limbs, exacerbated on the left side. Keen to mitigate future arthritis and mobility issues, we embarked on a comprehensive treatment plan.
ASSESSMENT
Conducting thorough physical evaluations, I identified stiffness and discomfort in Lindy's hip movement as well as reduced muscle mass over the hindlimbs. Treatment goals were established to alleviate discomfort, enhance hip mobility, strengthen hindlimb muscles, and address compensatory issues.
TREATMENT
Crafting a bespoke plan, Lindy completes targeted exercises daily, complimented by massage, alongside weekly laser and hydrotherapy sessions. Simple home adjustments, such as raised food and water bowls and providing non-slip flooring, further supported her comfort and mobility. Supplementing her diet with joint supplements complemented her regimen.
RESULTS
With consistent therapy and home management, Lindy's energy levels surged, her willingness to exercise increased, and her muscle mass improved noticeably. Remarkably, at 5 years old, Lindy remains medication-free for her hips and retains her puppy-like vigour.
